  6. The hardships that Arelys encountered growing up were many from having to go back and forth from her mom's home in the Bronx to her relatives in Puerto Rico, then her mom going to serious financial struggles aside from already working about 12 hours a day, as well as hearing and seeing her mom cry and suffer. Later on in life she struggled with dropping out of school, working full-time so young, getting married at 15, having a daughter a year after, having a controlling husband, and the racism and stereotyping she went through returning to college as a 39 year old adult in a prestigious college. The final and hardest struggle was when her mom was diagnosed with cancer and she left school to take care of her. I personally believe that one is never done growing up regardless of the age. What made her want to go back to school was when she saw that others at her job were getting paid better than her and getting promotions except her, realizing it was because they had degrees. Arelys saw that with a limited education there are doors to a better future that won't open but furthering her education could give her a better life and take her further. Her findings were that diabetes in Latino women lessens their ability to think and reason clearly also that researches didn't include women or Latinos.
